Waroona Dam & Golden Ponds

Well our trip started in the early morning heading off with my mate Shane around 6 am to hunt some Red Fin in the Waroona Dam. The weather reported clearing showers but as we drove down south it start to look pretty grim with heavy rains pounding at the car. We both don’t mind a bit of rain but heavy rain in a place we never been to is not a fun thing.

We arrive at the dam around 8am to find the weather had cleared up a bit, so we started to scout around the dam and found the first spot to try which was on the far east side of the dam. Our equipment was 2 bait rods using live worms, 1 spinner rod for lures and 2 fly fishing rods though both our casting still is pretty bad.

Within 5 casts of a red laser lure Shane hooked up to our first red fin of the day (and our first time catch a red fin) about 20 mins later Shane had hooked up to another red fin using our worms but turn out to be even a smaller red fin. Just to inform you all that red fin perch are counted as a pest in Western Australia so they dont have a size limit or bag limit and you are not allowed to throw them back into water.



After these 2 little guys our trip went kind of downhill with wind starting to pick up and blowing into our face it was quite hard to cast a lure or even our flies into the water. We decided to move our little camp around other parts of the dam which didn’t turn out that great either.



We stayed around 2pm before calling it a day for Waroona Dam. On the way back to Perth we decided to stop by a fishing pond called Golden Ponds. These ponds are filled with aquaculture trout, carps, perches and other fish. It costs $10 bucks entry per person and you fish however long you want but just need to pay for the fish you keep. Anyway it was my turn to shine with a hook up of 3 rainbow trout which one of them I decided to keep for the parents (weight at 560gm).

We also made a new friend at the ponds, I think Shane called him fatso since he was eating our bread that we were using for bait.



Hopefully our next trip will be more successful even though this is a winter trip and trout season is not in play so any wild trout cannot be kept. Hopefully our next trip will be Harvey Dam which is just south of Waroona Dam but supposedly has bigger Red Fins.
